In the Ozark Mountains the otherworld of spirits is ever-present and all around us. Spirit work features in just about every tradition of folk magic and healing in some way. In this class series, we’ll explore the Ozark conceptualization of the Otherworld, look at the skilled practitioners or those with the second sight who have traditionally worked within this realm, and how we can incorporate Ozark methods of magic and mediumship into our own practices. We’ll look at specific techniques of ancestor and saint work, adding the innate power of the land and its invisible inhabitants to our own power, and what to do when otherworldly entities need to be exorcised as well as methods of helping to spirits to heal and move on to a better afterlife.
This class series is taught by sixth-generation Ozark folklorist and writer Brandon Weston of Ozark Healing Traditions and is great for beginners as well as seasoned practitioners from any and all traditions.
The Ozark Otherworld

Journey into the mysterious world of the Ozark Otherworld, traditionally believed to be a mirror of this world and around us at all times. Those with the ability to sense into this world are called people with the sight or second sight, individuals whose work includes methods of spirit divination, exorcism, and elevation. The Ozark Otherworld doesn’t just include ghosts, and in this class we’ll look at a host of spirit-beings including haints, hags, imps, fairies, and more.
Ancestors, Saints, and Protectors

Each of us is surrounded by a host of spiritual protectors we might never even see or know. In this class, we’ll explore methods of invoking and working with our beloved ancestors, saints as protector spirits, and other guardian beings. This class will also include a look at traditional Ozark protectors of the home like house brownies as well as familiar spirits.
Ozark Animism: The Animated Landscape

In the Ozark Mountains the landscape is alive with personalities and spirits. Each tree, plant, and stone as well as land features like mountains and rivers has an individual identity. In this class, we’ll look at Ozark animistic concepts and how taking care of the land can be a magical practice of its own. We’ll also explore how working with our invisible neighbors can enhance our own practice as well as how magical work can sometimes fail when we aren’t in a right relationship to the land around us.
Spirit Working and Mediumship

Those with the second sight in the Ozarks have developed a variety of methods for working with the invisible beings around them. In this class, we’ll look at methods of spirit divination, invocation, spirit possession and obsession, as well as how we tell when we’re being approached by a benevolent or malevolent entity. This class will also explore specific methods offered by the tradition of Spiritism that can help us develop responsible and safe spirit practices.
Exorcism and Elevation

Sometimes malevolent or noisy spirits need to be evicted from the mortal world. In the Ozarks, there are a variety of techniques for spirit removal and exorcism as well as more gentle alternatives. In this class, we’ll explore traditional magical methods of exorcism including banishment, boundary work, trapping and sealing spirits, as well as what I call a “kinder exorcism,” utilizing methods of spiritual counseling, healing, and elevation for spirit beings.
