Tobacco has held a bad reputation since Europeans first stole the leaves back to their home countries to use recreationally. Early accounts by colonizers held the plant as part medicinal euphoriant part demon-possessed witch-plant. Amongst Indigenous peoples from the entire North and South American continents, tobacco has had a wide array of medicinal and spiritual uses. Traditional Ozark uses of the plant would have come through interactions with Indigenous peoples of the Southeast. It is still considered a sacred healer amongst Ozark practitioners today. In this class, we’ll look at the origins of this wonderworking plant in the Amazon jungles and trace its spread northwards. We’ll look at how Ozarkers have traditionally used tobacco as well as how we can safely and respectfully use the plant in our own work today.
