Many people are surprised to hear that a foundational belief in Ozark folk magic and healing practices is in the governing power of celestial bodies. At one time, the phases of the moon and zodiac moon signs in particular ruled over most of Ozark hillfolk’s actions. Hillfolk often consulted their farmers’ almanac to find the “best days” to, for instance, cut their hair, wean a calf, sew up a pair of stockings, get married, or a whole host of other life situations governed by the movement of the heavens. Healers and magical practitioners have also had an intimate relationship with these celestial bodies and have left behind many different ways of incorporating astrological practices into our work in the modern world. In this class, we will be looking at practices, spells, rituals, and diagnosis methods that specifically involve the phases of the moon, planetary and elemental correspondences, and the zodiac moon signs. Together we will look at how Ozark practitioners have used these magical timings in developing complicated and dynamic rituals as well as how we can use this knowledge to heighten the power of our own work today.

Recordings will be sent to ticket holders after the event.

Witchcraft has occupied a controversial position in the Ozarks since the first white settlers came to the region in the early 1800s. We will examine the many sides of this complicated story, from the point of view of proud witches themselves to the old tall tales and legends about broom-riding grannies and child-stealing hags. We'll try and separate some fact from the fiction and even throw in a spell or two you can use at home.

This is still an important part of Ozark folk magic even today where modern healers and practitioners draw from the well of tradition to cleanse magical illnesses, hexes, curses, and even unwelcome spirit influences from their homes and lives. In this class, we will be looking at three cleansing methods that use an elemental base: water, smoke, and fire. As a part of this hands-on workshop, participants will be able to craft their own herbal bath and smoke mixtures.

This class is open to individuals from all traditions and levels of magical practice.
